THE Blue Caterpillar Gallery at Butterflies for Africa in Willowton Road, Pietermaritzburg is hosting an exhibition of work by one of the South Africa’s foremost expressionist artists, Hennie Niemann.

With an artistic career spanning five decades, Niemann is a well established name amongst art collectors. The paintings exhibited at the Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery cover a variety of works ranging from his popular harvester scenes to still life and abstract.

Portrait of Freda Feldman in Basotho Hat by Irma Stern.

STRAUSS & Co’s next auction, which takes place on Monday, May 23, in Johannesburg, will include the sale of a museum piece by South Africa’s most celebrated female artist, Irma Stern.

This painting has come all the way from Australia and is titled, Portrait of Freda Feldman in Basotho Hat.

The sitter, Freda Feldman, was a very close friend of the artist and there are many interesting stories to disclose about their close friendship, their fettish for hats and more.

Strauss & Co have estimated that the painting – which is signed and dated 1943 and is accompanied by the Basuto hat (mokorotlo) worn by the sitter – should sell between R5 and 7 million. Continue reading

KZNSA Anniversary: Celebrating 20 years in Glenwood

The KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts was founded 110 years ago and has resided at its current address in Bulwer Road, Glenwood, since 1996. On May 12, 1996 Ben Ngubane, the first democratically elected Minister of Arts and Culture, opened the building and the KZNSA plans to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of this occasion.

The gallery will be hosting a four-week exhibition, starting on Tuesday, May 24 at 6pm with a special anniversary party and exhibition opening. The exhibition closed on June 19. Continue reading
