OPENING at artSPACE durban, 3 Miller Road, Durban, on Saturday, May 21 at 11 am is the exhibition, Surfing Rocks, which features the work of Caroline Wood and Zaf Zafer. The exhibition runs until May 26.
The exhibition is based around Durban surfers and rock n’ roll icons because they go hand in hand.
Zaf – a budding photographer who is also a pilot who flies out of Virginia Airport in Durban – will exhibit his photographic prints, and Caroline will be exhibiting surfboards which she has sprayed with custom artwork, furniture that she has painted and paintings on canvas.
Speaking about her work British-born, Caroline, who lives in Ramsgate, said: “As a child I travelled around from country to country with my family and I always had my pens and paper with me. From as far back as I can remember I had a passion for street art, comic books and music.
“Over the years I have been developing on my techniques which has brought me to where I am today as an independent artist.
“In 2003 I began working for Tivoli Art where I developed a style of canvas painting, which was largely rooted in my love for urban art, black and white film and music. The finish has a clean, crisp, bold and monochromatic feel.
“As a small independent art group we exhibited in galleries across the United Kingdom including London – Covent Garden and Portobello Road, NEC Spring fFir in Birmingham, Cheltenham and Sheffield. In 2005 I worked as an independent freelance artist, which is where I offered a wall mural service, portraits, logo designs and tattoo designs.
“I have recently found a new passion, which is painting up surfboards and car bodies making them look pretty. I work with 2K Autobody paints, primers and finishes for extra protection and durability against the elements.
“I started out freelancing for Wedge Surfboards who are based in Umzumbe, KwaZulu-Natal, and I designed for various surf companies in Cape Town including Dutchie Surf, Lifestyle Surf, Atlantic Surf and Surf Emporium (Spider Surfboards).”
