CURRENTLY on show at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street in Pietermaritzburg is the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Matric Art Exhibition 2016. The art works can be viewed in the gallery’s Main Room and at the side of the Shop passage walls. The exhibition runs until June 10.
The Tatham hosts an annual exhibition of art works produced by matriculants in KZN Midlands schools offering art as a subject. This has turned to be the highlight amongst other gallery events.
Seventeen schools in the region participated in this year’s exhibition. Gallery education staff visited schools during 2015 to see much of what had been produced, and were assisted by an independent selector to make the final choices.
Art teachers encouraged pupils to be innovative, and as always there are a number of surprises in this year’s selection. The art works take many forms, from sculpture and ceramics to photographs, prints, paintings, installations and digital images. A number of art journals, which form part of the curriculum, have been selected for display.
