Marvellous musical line-up at Music in the Hills

MUSIC in the Hills (MiTH) at The Knoll Guesthouse and Backpackers, Knoll Drive, Hilton, is hosting Liana and Gitanas, Craig Martens, Paul Arthur and Mali Zulu on Wednesday, April 6.

Liana and Gitanas: Liana has been singing for many years and has written many of her own songs and Austin made it through to the first round of a well-known TV talent show, while Kyle is a passionate sound engineer, excellent drummer and bass guitarist. Nishalin has been playing tabla for about 15 years.

Craig Martens was born and raised a country boy and essentially an acoustic musician with a singing career spanning four decades. He is the front man for the Bandits and member of Mottled Crew bluegrass outfits.

Paul Arthur, of Black Magic Woman fame, is back from Oz, but has brought the wizardry with him. His blues-rock lead breaks are well-known to the MiTH audience, though it’s been a while.

Mali Zulu plays a mixture of genres raging from Indie, Pop to stripped down house music. Some people call it Charismatic, Charming Music. He is currently based in Pietermaritzburg He also made it to Idols Season 10 (2014) and was in the top 31. Mali has just returned from a tour to the fairest Cape.

MiTH is a semi-open mic music club, which provides an opportunity for musicians to share the joy of their music with a friendly audience which includes fellow musicians – who have all “been there” too. Non-musicians welcome too!

Whether you’re a youngster looking for your first opportunity to perform publicly, or a more experienced/mature musician simply looking for people who are as passionate about music as you are why not head to MiTH.

FOLLOWING last week’s record breaking attendance at La Casa, during which Gangs of Ballet and Mali Zulu blew the audience away, and numerous well-attended music festivals around the Country, Maritzburg Musician’s Club plans to deliver more top-notch music.

On Tuesday, March 5, The Alley Cats, locally known from the Marshall Music shop, will be showcasing their gifts with a bit of swing, and a bit of bop! Also headed to the MMC are the Durban-based Kickstands, who deliver a tight, enjoyable acoustic sound. Continue reading

Chloe Clark to launch debut EP in Durban

Durban-based singer, pianist and songwriter Chloe Clark will release her debut four-track EP, In Between, on the roof of the Roma Revolving Restaurant on Saturday, April 2.

Chloe is exceptionally happy with how the project has come together over the past two years and is also excited to have Bradley Grey and Nosihle Zulu open the event. In addition the eleven part vocal group she coaches as choir mistress at Thomas More College, The Retrobeats, will provide backing harmonies.

Enjoy a unique new concert series with the Parlotones

The Parlotones

AFTER a successful 2015 which saw The Parlotones complete three successful tours of South Africa as well as a tour of Europe, the band is heading around the country for a series of concerts titled The Parlotones Orchestrated.

It will see the band take their hits to venues across the country together with a chamber ensemble which has been arranged and will be conducted by composer and acclaimed musician, Brendan Jury. Continue reading

Forest Jam Groove Orchestra perform gigs in Durban

rainbow forestTHE Rainbow Restaurant in Pinetown welcomes back to it’s stage Madala Kunene as a special guest in collaboration with Chico Antonio and the Forest Jam Groove Orchestra on Sunday, April 3. Doors open at 1pm. Tickets R100.

The Forest Jam Groove Orchestra will also perform at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Howard College campus at 6 pm on Wednesay, April 6.
