Following the first successful edition of Sundaes on Junction, Newtown Junction proudly hosts the indomitable Jazz xPressions from 1 pm to 2 pm on April 10. Come and revel in their cool fusion of jazz, Afro, Latin and contemporary sounds.
The band performs a wide range of original material and covers performances featuring the music of the late Bheki Mseleku and Miriam Makeba, as well as Adullah Ibrahim, Sibongile Khumalo and Hugh Masekela amongst others.
Jazz XPressions was formed in 2006 and features that talents of amongst others Yusuf Justin Holcroft (United Kingdom) on saxophone, Lwanda Gogwana (South Africa) on trumpet, Joey Williams (America) on drums, Darlington Okufu Osaji (Nigeria) on keyboard, Gregory Moonsammy (SA) on bass guitar and Tina Gogwana (SA) on vocals – all of whom will be playing at Newtown Junction. Individually, all the members of the band are recording artists in their own right and are constantly involved in session work.
Jazz XPressions recently complete a demo CD entitled The Journey, with a full album The Second Chance slated for release later this year. The project will be produced and engineered by the acclaimed Neil Kuny and is currently being recorded at SABC – Music Master Studios.
Jazz on Junction is held in the Piazza and is free to audiences. With its remarkable combination of shopping, eating and entertainment and set against the cultural richness of the Newtown precinct, Newtown Junction is the place to be on lazy Sunday afternoons this autumn.
