Five of SA’s best fiction books set to go head-to-head for the Barry Ronge prize

AFTER months of deliberation the shortlist for the Barry Ronge Fiction Prize, in association with Porcupine Ridge, has been revealed. The winner, who will receive R100 000, will be announced on Saturday, June 24.

The five shortlisted books are: The Printmaker by Bronwyn Law-Viljoen (Umuzi); Period Pain by Kopano Matlwa (Jacana Media); Little Suns by Zakes Mda (Umuzi); The Woman Next Door by Yewande Omotoso (Chatto & Windus); and The Safest Place You Know by Mark Winkler (Umuzi). Continue reading

Critical questions about South Africa raised in Alan Paton Award shortlist

nDnRQu7THE shortlist for the 2017 Sunday Times Alan Paton Literary Award has been revealed, writes Estelle Sinkins.

Contesting this year’s R100 000 prize, which will be revealed on June 24, will be: Under Nelson Mandela Boulevard – Life In Cape Town’s Stowaway Underground by Sean Christie; Darwin’s Hunch: Science, Race and the Search for Human Origins by Christa Kuljian; Murder at Small Koppie: The Real Story of The Marikana Massacre by Greg Marinovich; My Own Liberator: A Memoir by Dikgang Moseneke; and Letters of Stone: From Nazi Germany to South Africa by Steven Robins. David Snaith to perform Telemann Viola Concerto at Baroque 2000 concert

Baroque 2000, who have just returned from giving four performances as the resident orchestra at the 2017 Harare International Festival of the Arts, will present a concert at the Mariannhill Monastery, near Pinetown, at 11.30 am on Sunday, May 7.

The programme will include David Snaith as the soloist in Telemann’s Viola Concerto in G, Telemann’s picturesque burlesque suite, Don Quixote, Biber’s Batallia, depicting various militaristic scenes, and Handel’s Concerto Grosso Op 6 No1.

Harold Ellis Clark, the writer of ‘We Live Here’ at the Playhouse.

The International Arts Foundation Inc. of New Orleans in the United States, in association with Durban’s Playhouse Company, presenting the acclaimed stage drama, We Live Here, by the award-winning American playwright, Harold Ellis Clark.

The powerfully written work, will be staged in The Playhouse Drama Theatre from 5 to 7 May. It marks an ongoing sister-city cultural exchange between New Orleans and Durban, which aims to bridge communication and understanding between the two cities. Continue reading

Delegate registration for Africa’s premier film finance and co-production market, the Durban FilmMart (DFM), is open.

Celebrating its 8th edition, this year’s DFM, a joint programme of the Durban Film Office (DFO), the eThekwini Municipality’s industry development unit, and the Durban International Film Festival – hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts – takes place from 14 to 17 July.
