Umuntu: a celebration of Blackness

image001OVER the past two months, the University of KwaZulu-Natal Drama and Performance students have been working on a devised theatre piece that, at its core, is a celebration of Blackness.

In close collaboration with the cast, recently published playwright, Masters student, and multi-award-winning director, Kline Smith, draws captivating performances from over thirty dancers, poets, musicians and actors in Umuntu.

The work will be performed in the Hexagon Studio Theatre at 6 pm on May 5, 6 and 7. Tickets are R40 (R25 for students) at the door. Continue reading

Double bill of edgy work by contemporary dancer, Fabrice Lambert at DUT

THE French Institute of South Africa and the Alliance Française of Durban are presenting a performance by Fabrice Lambert, an internationally-acclaimed French artist who combines dance, movement, choreography, and installation.

He will be in Durban as part of his African tour where he will perform his two pieces Gravité and D’Eux #2 as a double-bill at the Courtyard Theatre at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) for one performance only, on Saturday, May 7 at 7 pm. Continue reading

Applause for KickstArt’s celebration of Sondheim

DURBAN theatre company, KickstArt, walked away with three Naledi Awards in Johannesburg recently for their dark and brooding staging of Stephen Sondheim’s blood-drenched classic Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Meanwhile, at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Howard College campus in Durban, the company is hosting its first production of 2016, another iconic Stephen Sondheim production, the musical fairy tale parable for grown-ups: Into the Woods. Continue reading

Review: Into The Woods – Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 

THERE is a saying ‘be careful what you wish for’, but I for one am extremely happy that my wish – that Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods would be staged in Durban one day – came true. Currently running at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, KickStArt Theatre Company has again showed what can be achieved by ambitious dreamers and a dream cast and crew.
