Jazz vocalist Thobeka Langa at Seaman’s Corner in Hammarsdale


JAZZ vocalist, Thobeka Langa, at Seaman’s Corner at Unit 3 in Hammarsdale at 6 pm on Sunday, May 1. Tickets are R30 at the door.

Thobeka is a 27-year-old jazz singer from Pietermaritzburg, who developed her love for music at a very young age. She started singing with the community gospel group, Change, in the city.

She later enrolled study performing arts at the Mbongeni Ngema Academy, immediately after completing her matric; and further pursued her music studies the University of Kwazulu Natal’s Howard College School of Arts where she specialised in jazz and popular music.

Thobeka has performed with Lira, Judith Sephuma, Ronnie Jordan, MiCasa, and Ernie Smith; as well as with the Change Gospel Group, Victory Sonqoba Arts Company, Beat-Route Jazz Band, Soul Force Jazz Band and Unlocked Keys.

Among the events she has performed at include the Durban Vodacom July, MTN Durban Jazz festival, Ballito Prawn and Jazz Festival, SAIFTA Awards, KZN Department of Arts and Culture High Tea Party and Pam Golding Awards.

In Hammarsdale, Thobeka will be performing some of her compositions and favourite jazz standards, as well as pop songs by her favourite vocalists from way way back. She will be joined on stage by Ndumiso Ndlovu on keys, Senzo Mdamba on bass guitar and Stanley Matlou on drums.

This concert is supported by Concerts SA and the eThekwini Municipality Arts and Living Cultures department and hosted by iSupport Music Business.

Concerts SA is a joint South African/Norwegian initiative that aims to stimulate live music in South Africa by finding and implementing ways to create regular, sustainable performance platforms.

It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciation of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools. In addition to her public performance Thobeka and her band will performing at Sansikane Primary School in Cato Ridge.
