ZAKES Mda’s And The Girls In Their Sunday Dresses will be performed in the Hexagon Studio Theatre at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg campus at 7 pm from Thursday, April 21 to Saturday, April 23.
And The Girls In Their Sunday Dresses is a humorous story of two characters, The Woman and The Lady – one a retired prostitute fallen on hard times, the other a domestic worker – waiting in line to buy subsidized rice from a government office.
The women strike up an unlikely relationship: one has a chair; the other some food. “All we need is patience and our turn will come,” says one. As they wait to be served, they share stories of heartbreak, and they find they have more in common than initially meets the eye.
StageFront Productions staging of And the Girls in Their Sunday Dresses has been adapted from the short story by Zakes Mda. It is directed by BreeH Cele, and performed by Nompilo Jili and Pertunia Msani.
Tickets are R50 at the door. Inquiries: 033 260 5537.
