Cool tunes from Durban and The Netherlands at Centre for Jazz

THE Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Howard College campus in Durban will be hosting the Peter Beets Trio, from The Netherlands, at 6 pm on Wednesday, September 27.

Alexander and Peter Beets, together with their friend, Gijs Dijkhuizen, are currently on a tour of South Africa. The band is at the forefront of jazz music in Holland.

Peter, an acclaimed musician with an international reputation, undertook no fewer than 26 international tours in 2016. He has toured Europe extensively, as well as the United States and Japan.

The brothers performed together as The Beets Brothers, releasing their debut album in 1990. Two more followed and over the years they have built up an enormous body of work, many in collaboration with other artists.

The Centre for Jazz and Popular music (CJPM) is on level two of the Shepstone Building at UKZN. Doors open at 5.30 pm. Tickets are R70 (R45 pensioners, R20 students).

Beam Brothers

The Beam Brothers, will be performing at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at 6 pm on Tuesday, September 26.

Established over 60 years ago in Mpumalanga, Hammersdale, the band’s sound could be easily mistaken for Gospel music. The Durban-based foursome uses their music to reflect on the ins and outs of day-to-day life.

Vocalists, Malusi G Gwala, Sam Mqina, Michael Mkhize and Nkosinathi Lucky Gama, will be backed by Mthobisi Mthalane (piano), Mandla Mgabhi (percussion), Mandla Zikalalala (bass) and Philani Atlas Duma (drums).

Doors open at 5.30 pm and tickets are R70 (R45 pensioners, R20 students).

MEMORIES of Sophiatown and District Six will be envoked when the Umkhumbane Jazz Ensemble (UJE) performs at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Howard College campus at 6 pm on Wednesday, September 6.

Zoe The Seed to perform at UKZN’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music

Due to Unforeseen circumstances, Tshepo Fela will no longer be playing at Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on Wednesday, March 1.
