The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will be hosting a concert with American musician John Funkhouser on Wednesday, March 9 at 6 pm.
John is a professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is a pianist, bassist and composer, leading a trio and quartet that has performed my compositions regularly for almost 20 years.
John is interested in a wide spectrum of music. As the leader and pianist of the John Funkhouser Trio and as a sideman, Funkhouser has toured the United States several times, performing at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, Pittsburgh’s Mellon Jazz Festival, Oklahoma City’s Jazz and many other music festivals.
He has played at the Blue Note Jazz Club, Birdland, and Dizzy’s in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Wang Center and the Berklee Performance Center in Boston, and top venues in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kansas City, Denver, Seattle, and dozens of other US cities.
John has also performed abroad in such diverse locations as Paris, Toulon, Zurich, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Toronto, and Montreal. He is now currently on a three week tour in South Africa.
John will be joined by Ildo Nandja (bass) and Bruce Baker (drums) at The Centre for Jazz and Popular music (CJPM), on level 2 of the Shepstone Building at UKZN’s Howard College campus in Durban.
