MARITZBURG pianist, Christopher Duigan, plays a selection of music by two of the greatest Romantic poet virtuosos of the piano, Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt, at 7.30 pm on Friday, February 26 at 35 Montgomery Drive, Athlone and at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street on Sunday, February 28 at 11 am.

The programme will also be presented at St Agnes Church in Kloof at 7.30 pm on Thursday, January 25. Continue reading

Focus on women at FilmClub

LastMistressFANS of arthouse movies rejoice – FilmClub is back at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg, for a new season, starting at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 2.

The Last Mistress, directed Catherine Breillat (France, 2007) kicks off a special focus on women directors. It is a slightly a-typical film from Breillat – a sumptuous period drama which chronicles the intense love affair between a young libertine and an outrageously unconventional, sexually assertive woman some years his senior – the latter played with ferocious sensuality by Asia Argento.

RESIDENTS of Pietermaritzburg are getting the chance to explore the many historic buildings in the city in the new exhibition, Building History: Drawings and prints of historic Pietermaritzburg buildings by Carola Brotherton, which opens in the Schreiner Gallery at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street at 10.30 am for 11 am on Sunday, February 7. An evening of Italian opera favourites

THE Italian community in KwaZulu-Natal is being urged to support La Music Dell’Italianio – A Gala Opera Concert with a seasonal touch at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg at 7.30 pm on Monday, December 14.

The concert, which features four of South Africa’s most acclaimed voices – Beverly Chiat (soprano), Violina Anguelov (mezzo-soprano), baritone Njabulo Madlala, and tenor, Sipho Fubesi – aims to celebrate the month of Italian language and culture abroad. Continue reading
