THE Friends of Tatham Art Gallery (Fotag) is hosting a fundraising quiz evening at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg, on Friday, August 12.

ESTELLE SINKINS spoke to sports commentator, Andy Capostagno, who lives in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and will be the quiz master at the event, about the chances that the Springboks and Proteas have in the forthcoming internationals and how he feels South African sportsmen and women will fare at the Rio Olympics.

He also shares his thoughts on working as a commentator and why supporting events like the Fotag Quiz is important. Continue reading

Wire and Wood Exhibition at Durban’s Phansi Museum

South Africa has a thriving cultural heritage of wire and wood art. The exhibition Wire and Wood, which opens on Saturday, August 13, highlights a selection of work drawn from the permanent collection of the Phansi Museum and items loaned from friends of the museum.

Artists include: Philemon Sangweni, Julius Mfete, Raphael Magwaza, Carl Roberts, Noria Mabasa, Johannes Maswangani, Sibusiso Maphumulo, Zamukwake, Gumede and wire work from Thapiwa Musani, Thulani Mchunu, Ntombifuthi Magwaza and Elliot Mkhize. Re-Imagining Sharpeville – a solo exhibition by 2015 Tierney Fellow Tsepo Gumbi runs at the Photo Workshop Gallery at The Market until August 28.

His exhibition is a visual investigation of contemporary Sharpeville. Seeking to explore themes and subjects that are overshadowed by historic events of 1976, Re-Imagining Sharpeville examines the “township” with a fresh vibrancy and creativity, without losing the integrity of its historical significance. THE KwaMuhle Museum, 130 Bram Fischer Road, Durban is hosting South African Voices:  Towards a Museum of HIV Memory and Learning, a legacy project of AIDS2016.

South African Voices strives to tell the story of our HIV history in a manner that is authentic, elegant, sensitive and holistic. It marks the start of a South African collection of artefacts, artistic, historic and photographic items that pay tribute to people affected by HIV.

The collected items pay tribute to those who suffered and succumbed, and those who live with HIV every day in South Africa.
