Jozi Unsigned, in association with Concerts SA, hosts the legendary Blondie Makhene, live at Iketleng for the August edition of the Sunday Soiree on Sunday, August 28.
Makhene rose to fame in the late-1960s, earning the title of “Soweto’s first teen star”. Over the next four decades, he was part of the musical duo Blondie and Pappa, who brought disco-fever to the country, with memorable tracks like Together and Oh What a Night; as well as the solo hope-inspiring hit Inside Out.
Makhene made his mark as a producer too, earning credits on some of Brenda Fassie’s greatest hits, including Weekend Special and Life Is Going On. He topped this with a South African Music Award for producing Hugh Masekela’s 2002 album, Time.
With a career that coincided with some of the most turbulent days in South African history, Makhene considers himself an activist through art. “Music became my AK47,” he says, “and the stage became my bush.”
Fast forward to 2016, and the living legend, continues to write, record, teach and inspire a new generation of South African musicians.
The Sunday Soiree featuring Blondie Makhene, is part of the Concerts SA venue circuit programme, which aims to foster love and support for live music in our communities. The programme also seeks to anchor small and medium sized venues in urban and rural Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.
