As part of its August Ciné Club, the Alliance Française of Durban is hosting a screening of La French (The Connection) at 6 pm on Tuesday, August 16 at Alliance Française de Durban, 22 Sutton Crescent, Corner Lilian Ngoyi (Windermere) Road, Morningside, Durban. Admission is free and there is safe parking. A cash bar will be available.
La French, which is in French with English subtitles, is set in Marseille in 1975. It centres on Pierre Michel, a young magistrate who has moved south from Metz with his wife and children, after being appointed a judge of organised crime.
He decides to attack The Connection, a gangster organisation that exports heroin throughout the world.
Taking no heed of warnings, Judge Michel sets out alone against Gaëtan Zampa, a emblematic figure of the crime world and a boss whose position and contacts make untouchable. But the judge rapidly comes to realise that, to get results, he must change his methods.
Set against the backdrop of the beautiful yet dangerous city of Marseille, La French is an intricately arranged thriller that blends nail-biting suspense with unhurried Mediterranean style. A three-times César Award nominee, the film was widely appreciated for its dramatic cinematography and gritty storytelling.
