BBC World News explores the world of Antarctica’s penguins

The Penguin Watchers 17BBC World News (DStv channel 400) is heading to the Antarctic for a special programme of Our World – The Penguin Watchers with Victoria Gill at 1.30 pm and 6.30 pm on Saturday, April 9 and at 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm on Sunday, April 10.

A unique wildlife monitoring exercise is underway on the remote Antarctic Peninsula, aimed at better understanding the lives of the thousands of penguins that live there.  Scientists want to know how they are being affected by their changing environment, particularly the warming climate.

Dozens of automatic cameras have been set up to record the secret lives of the continent’s most famous residents. The cameras observe the scene all year, even during the depth of the harsh winter -when all human observers have left.

For Our World Victoria Gill has been to Antarctica to join the scientists as they collect a year’s worth of photographs and begin to analyse their findings.
