MARITZBURG piper, Ian Turnbull, will be performing at the Last Night of the Proms concert in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 7.30 pm on Saturday, October 10.

A member of the Pietermaritzburg Caledonian Pipe Band, which he joined in 1994, he has played in parades and competitions around South Africa. In 2013 he travelled to Glasgow, Scotland where he studied at the College of Piping, and was tutored by some of the foremost pipers in the piping world.  He plays a set of Terry pipes which are modelled after a prized set of Macdougal pipes from the 19th century and wears his family tartan – the dress Turnbull.

Also performing at the concert will be Celtic Heartbeat, whose members, Melissa and Samantha Wood, have competed at the highest level in both Irish and Highland dancing, with Samantha having qualified three times to dance at the Irish World Championships.

They have recently been successful in the TCRG exam, an international Irish dance teaching qualification; and they had a childhood dream come true earlier this year when they saw Michael Flatley dance and met him.

Dancing together as ‘Celtic Heartbeat’, they have danced in numerous shows on the South Coast, in Durban and in Pietermaritzburg, where they are well known to local audiences for their appearances in the Sunset Soirees, produced by Ronel Wood (no relation!) and the late Megan de Beyer. These shows were very special to Melissa and Samantha, as their mother trained under Megan for many years.
They will be dancing to Lord of the Dance and the Sailors Hornpipe.
The Last Night of the Proms concert features the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, a massed choir, dancers, and soloists, Russian-born cellist, Boris Kerimov, Romanian French-horn player, Sorin Osorhean, tenor Lukhanyo Mayoke, and Christopher Cockburn who will be playing the City Hall organ.
Tickets range from R120 to R260. Tickets are available from Parklane SuperSpar — phone 033 342 3487. Secure parking is provided in the City hall precinct.

The Last Night of the Proms in Pietermaritzburg is presented by Parklane SuperSpar and supported by The Witness, Msunduzi Municipality, CPW Printers, and Music Revival.
