MARITZBURG piper, Ian Turnbull, will be performing at the Last Night of the Proms concert in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 7.30 pm on Saturday, October 10.
A member of the Pietermaritzburg Caledonian Pipe Band, which he joined in 1994, he has played in parades and competitions around South Africa. In 2013 he travelled to Glasgow, Scotland where he studied at the College of Piping, and was tutored by some of the foremost pipers in the piping world. He plays a set of Terry pipes which are modelled after a prized set of Macdougal pipes from the 19th century and wears his family tartan – the dress Turnbull.
Also performing at the concert will be Celtic Heartbeat, whose members, Melissa and Samantha Wood, have competed at the highest level in both Irish and Highland dancing, with Samantha having qualified three times to dance at the Irish World Championships.
They have recently been successful in the TCRG exam, an international Irish dance teaching qualification; and they had a childhood dream come true earlier this year when they saw Michael Flatley dance and met him.
The Last Night of the Proms in Pietermaritzburg is presented by Parklane SuperSpar and supported by The Witness, Msunduzi Municipality, CPW Printers, and Music Revival.
