The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal is hosting a performance by award-winning saxophonist, Ivan Mazuze, on Wednesday, October 7 at 6 pm.

Ivan is a Norway-based composer and world jazz artist of Mozambique origin. For his concert he will be joined by a quartet that includes Frank Paco (drums), Peter Ndlala (bass), Dave Ledbetter (guitar), and Sifiso Makalisa on piano.

Together they present melodies with a background of southern Africa sound traditions mixed with contemporary West African drumming traditions. Deeply rooted in jazz harmony, and with a rhythm section consisting of electric bass, guitar and acoustic piano as pillars, fans can expect plenty of improvisation over a landscape that moves between jazz and the African urban soundscape.

On this release concert tour will quintet presents its newly recorded album Ubuntu.

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) is on Level 2 of the Shepstone Building on UKZN’s Howard College Campus in Durban. Entry costs R50 (pensioners R30 and students R15). Inquiries: Thuli on 031 260 3385 or email Zamat1@ukzn.ac.za
