The concert is supported by Concerts SA, a joint South African/Norwegian live music development project housed within the SAMRO Foundation.

Working with musicians, promoters, venue owners and audiences, and providing support to the sector through research and skills development for music professionals, the project aims to build a vibrant and viable live music circuit in southern Africa.

It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciation of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools.

 

National Arts Festival rewards arts community as festival closes

ARTISTIC excellence was celebrated at the National Arts Festival on Sunday morning (July 10) when the winners of the 2016 Standard Bank Ovation Awards were revealed at a ceremony which also honoured outgoing National Arts Festival artistic director, Ismail Mahomed.

Commenting on the impact of the awards, Mahomed said: “The Ovation Awards have earned a significant gravitas in the arts sector. They have become a barometer for audiences and visiting arts managements about productions that should not be missed. Marvellous music at the Maritzburg Musicians Club

It shouldn’t be startling to know that the Maritzburg Musicians Club (MMC) is bringing strikingly good talent to the La Casa stage in Quarry Road, Pietermaritzburg.

Hard-working musician, David Starke, who loves to play old-time music, is on tour from Eshowe with Norwegian musical fiend and friend Jaran. And to keep you focused, local band Stark will also be playing on the night. There will also be having a sneak preview of the sounds of Nicky Grieshaber of Keys Alive at the beginning of the evening.

Arno Carstens is set to perform a surprise concert on the Caversham Mill Restaurant lawns in the KZN Midlands on Saturday, July 17 at 2.30 pm.

The lead singer of Springbok Nude Girls and solo artist has released 10 studio albums. He has had over 20 top ten singles, won five South African Music Awards and shared the stage with legends of the music world including U2, The Rolling Stones and REM.

Arno has also toured sold out shows extensively in South Africa, the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, headlined every major South African festival and performed at legendary international music festivals including Isle of Wight, Glastonbury, V Festival, T in the Park and Hard Rock Calling.

12 musicians strike the right note for SAMRO competition

The battle is on for the country’s best young instrumentalists, after SAMRO Foundation unveiled the 12 semi-finalists in the 2016 Overseas Scholarships Competition.

Six jazz and six Western art music performers will be competing for two R200 000 scholarships to further their music studies abroad, plus an array of additional awards. Continue reading

U – The Space presents Thabang Tabane

THABANG Tabane is the heir to the father and founder of the Malombo music, Dr. Philip Tabane, who has gained international reputation for being the leader of legendary Malombo for over four decades.

He learned to play drums by watching his uncle Mabi Thobejane, the co-founder of Malombo in the 60s. No wonder then that at an early age, Thabang became the sideman in his dad’s band. He has toured places such as Russia, Sweden, Togo, London, and the United States with Malombo and Thandiswa Mazwayi.
