It shouldn’t be startling to know that the Maritzburg Musicians Club (MMC) is bringing strikingly good talent to the La Casa stage in Quarry Road, Pietermaritzburg.
Hard-working musician, David Starke, who loves to play old-time music, is on tour from Eshowe with Norwegian musical fiend and friend Jaran. And to keep you focused, local band Stark will also be playing on the night. There will also be having a sneak preview of the sounds of Nicky Grieshaber of Keys Alive at the beginning of the evening.
Tickets for the gig on Tuesday, July 12 are R40. Doors open at 7 pm.
Dave is originally from Cape Town and graduated from the University of Cape Town with a degree in drama in 2005. He is now based in Eshowe and works as an actor, musician, composer and teacher. Dave has a particular love for the old, soulful music of yesteryear and creates performances that are minimalist and sincere.
He and Jaran met five years ago when Jaran was running a music school in Zululand. They quickly made a musical connection and have been performing together on-and-off ever since.
Jaran, who hails from Oslo, Norway, is primarily a drummer/percussionist, but also plays piano, guitar, bass and delivers pretty mean vocal harmonies. This tour will feature stripped-down guitar, vocals and percussion covering a wide range of genres, including folk, rock, reggae, rockabilly and swing.

Stark is a four piece band who describe themselves as a fun-loving bunch of people. Gareth on guitar, Mel on vocals, Josh on drums and Paul on bass play their own original songs and within the first hour of getting together in their band room, had written You got me good, which features on their Soundcloud account. The songwriting has been getting stronger ever since.
Many have tried to categorise their sound. They claim to not follow any particular rules or genres of music. It is what it is. Been described as fresh, breezy, punky, grinding grooves. The fun element certainly comes through with their energetic and lively stage presence. They seem to really enjoy every performance!
They are currently looking for sponsorship and management as a means to move forward. They would love to record radio quality songs and aim to produce an album as soon as they are able.
