ROUNDING off 2016’s newly initiated classical music programme, UJ Arts & Culture hosts the inaugural Dean’s Concert 2016, entitled A Grand Night for Singing.

As the grand finale of the year’s programme, this free concert offers Johannesburg audiences a rare opportunity to hear two of South Africa’s rising opera stars – soprano, Siphamandla Yakupa, and tenor, Lukhanyo Moyake – along with the celebrated South African pianist, Christopher Duigan, the award-winning UJ Choir conducted by Renette Bouwer, and the Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at UJ, accomplished baritone Federico Freschi. MARITZBURG pianist, Christopher Duigan, will be performing the music of Ludwig van Beethoven at St Agnes Church in Kloof at 7.30 pm on Thursday, October 27 and at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg at 11.30 am on Sunday, October 30.

He will play three sonatas from the canon of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas that represent each of these periods: the light-hearted Sonata in F Op 10 No 2, the popular ‘Moonlight’ Sonata Op 27 no 2 and the Sonata in E Op 109. Continue reading

Pietermaritzburg City Orchestra to delight Hilton Arts Festival-goers

If you’re planning to visit the Hilton Arts Festival – which runs from September 16 to September 18 at Hilton College – then make sure you pencil in a date with the wonderful Pietermaritzburg City Orchestra.

These talented musicians will be playing at 11 am and 1 pm on Sunday, September 18 in the Amphitheatre.

Classical music fans can look forward to hearing well-known pieces like Strauss’ Radetsky March and music from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, as well as popular tunes from musicals including Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Evita and the television hit, Game of Thrones.

Admission to the concerts is free.
