THE Sound Cafe in Warne House, 5 Garlicke Drive, Ballito is set to offer music lovers the best in South African jazz every Friday evening, starting this month.
First up is pianist and composer, Sibu ‘Mash’ Mashiloane, who will playing his brand of acoustic, traditional jazz on Friday, September 8.
Mashiloane, who just released a new album, Rotha – A Tribute To Mama, says his recent work shares Coltrane’s harmonic movements with African influences within the melody and references to South African tribal and spiritual sounds.
He will be joined on staged by Freeman Gumede on bass guitar, Stanley Matlou on drums and Keorapetse Kolwane on vocals.
Cape Town singer-songwriter, Maya Spector, will be performing at the Sound Cafe on Friday, September 15. Having recently finished her long-awaited EP, My Simple Little EP, it is time for her to tour KwaZulu-Natal to show off her skills.
Spector’s band will consist of Burton Naidoo on keys, Llewelyn Chetty on bass guitar, Phumlani Mtiti on saxophone and Riley Giandhari on drums
On Friday, September 22, Afro-soul and jazz vocalist, Zethembiso ‘Zethe’ Mdletshe, will take to the stage with be Zibusiso Makhathini on keys, Dalisu Ndlazi on bass and Riley Giandhari on drums.
With a degree in music, majoring in jazz, from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Mdletshe has performed at the UKZN Centre for Jazz, the Jazzy Rainbow, the Durban Playhouse, Bat Centre, The Chairman, and Alliance Française.

The final act for September will be the all-female jazz band, Heels Over Head. The band, which recently returned from performing in New Orleans in the United States, is known for making the audience get on their feet and dance to their rhythmic bass lines and their cheerful melodies. Catch them live on Friday, September 29.
Looking ahead to October, the Sound Cafe will host a performance by Argentinian singer, composer and keyboard player, Muriel Marco, on Friday, October 6 and Nigerian musician, Solomon Willy, on Friday, October 13.
