HEAD down to La Casa in Quarry Road, Pietermaritzburg, at 7 pm on Tuesday, July 26 to experience the awesome musical art of Africa! The Maritzburg Musicians Club is hosting an evening with artists from Cape Town, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
Local favourites Dan and Jacky, of andtheRiddle, will be gracing the stage as part of their national tour. There will also be a first time performance from ZISAMO – a beautiful collaboration of passionate musos from around Africa.
andtheRiddle are modern, free-spirited multi-instrumentalists based in Cape Town who live, write, rehearse, record mix, design, edit and produce everything in-house. They devote their energy to the pursuit of happiness, harmony and reason, and embody this philosophy in the powerful, percussive, wholesome acoustic melodies they create.
Intent on creating something honest and sustainable in an inherently dishonest and unsustainable modern world andtheRiddle live, write, rehearse, record, design, edit and produce everything in-house. Their current five track self-titled EP andtheRiddle (2014) is packaged in a unique folding cardboard cover design with each disc featuring hand-stencilled artwork.
Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, andtheRiddle relocated to Cape Town in 2013 to pursue music full-time. Their full, upbeat acoustic sound is well-suited to many different environments settings and purposes, from exhibitions at intimate wineland galleries, to corporate events for clients such as Unilever and SteinBuild to the big stages of Long Street.
They consider themselves very privileged to be regularly featured artists at BBQUES on Groot Constantia Wine Estate,The Sunday Showcase at The Nameless Pub in Somerset West and the Acoustic Afternoons at Habour Lights in Gordon’s Bay. Moreover andtheRiddle is exceptionally proud of their work in aid of the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC).
Recognising the importance of performance, andtheRiddle places much emphasis on their live show, seeing the stage as a natural environment for the honest, real, tangible music they create and for which modern audiences progressively demand.

Afro-Jazz band, ZISAMO, translated from Xhosa, meaning ‘bring some more’, draws its members from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The band is made up of: vocalist and percussionist Princess Dube, rhythmic guitarist Stanley Mchunu, lead guitarist Manuel Masinga, bass guitarist Magiza Shange and on drums Thabani Luthuli.
The band was formed in 2013 in Clermont, a small Durban township, with only three members Stanley, Princess and Thabani who would meet at a local kiosk; writing, practising and planning performances. A short while after the band was formed they were joined by members Magiza and Manuel. Getting gigs was tough but they stuck together through the hard times because of a shared vision.
ZISAMO won the best Afro-Jazz category at the Ushaka Marine Worlds’ search for the stars 2013 and have since performed at various places in and around Durban. There music ranges from Latino to Brazilian jazz, Spanish, Blues, Afro pop, Afro jazz and Mbira music.
Entry is R40.
