Royal Court Theatre’s Hangmen to be screened at Cinema Nouveau

The next production in the National Theatre Live series to be screened at Cinema Nouveau is the acclaimed Royal Court Theatre production of Hangmen.

Written by Olivier and Academy Award-winner Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, The Cripple of Inishmaan), and with an all-star cast, the big-screen version of this hit new comedy releases on Saturday, April 9 at Cinema Nouveau.

Following a sell-out run at the Royal Court Theatre, the acclaimed West End transfer of Hangmen, with a cast including David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), Andy Nyman (Peaky Blinders, Death at a Funeral) and Johnny Flynn (Clouds of Sils Maria), was filmed at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre by NT Live for screening in cinemas around the globe, including at Cinema Nouveau theatres in South Africa.

In his small pub in Oldham, Harry (Morrissey) is something of a local celebrity. But what’s the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they’ve abolished hanging? Amongst the cub reporters and sycophantic pub regulars dying to hear Harry’s reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd (Nyman) and the peculiar Mooney (Flynn) lurk with very different motives for their visit.

Produced by Robert Fox and Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions and Royal Court Theatre Productions, Hangmen is the Royal Court Theatre’s first collaboration with NT Live.

Winner of two Olivier Awards for Best New Play and Best Set Design earlier this month, the play is directed by Matthew Dunster. Set and costume design is by Anna Fleischle, lighting design is by Joshua Carr and sound design is by Ian Dickinson for Autograph.

Hangmen can be seen at 7 pm on April 9, 13 and 14 and at 2.30 pm on April 10 at Cinema Nouveau theatres in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.  The running time of this production is two hours 40 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.
