THE KZN Philharmonic Orchestra is giving the people of Durban a Christmas present – a free concert of festive favourites in the Durban City Hall on Saturday, December 12 at 11 am.

Included in the programme will be timeless carols like Joy to the World and Hark the Herald Angels Sing; and more contemporary festive sacred and secular numbers, popular tunes, and hits from their musical-theatre and concert repertoire.

The orchestra will be conducted by Daniel Walshaw, Artistic Administrator of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic.

The concert will also feature Cape Town-based jazz vocalist, Amy Walton, who will be adding her own jazz magic to familiar tunes such as Santa Claus is Coming to Town and Last Christmas.

Known for her unique sense of harmony when approaching her writing and arranging, Walton has a versatile vocal range that allows her to perform various genres of music.

She has performed in big scale productions such as Symphonic Rocks and has featured as a soloist on several high profile events such as the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture function, and the Old Mutual annual charity ball.

Says KZN Philharmonic Artistic Director Bongani Tembe: “The December holidays present a wonderful opportunity for the people of Durban to celebrate families and togetherness. This concert will show the lighter side of our orchestra as we will present an eclectic, carefully-chosen  programme that is perfect for all ages.”

The orchestra will also be joined by some young student musicians from the KZN province… and Santa is rumoured to be making an appearance!

The KZN Philharmonic is widely regarded as Africa’s premier orchestra. Comprising 70 full time musicians from 20 countries, the orchestra has earned a reputation for excellence, innovation and high artistic values.

The orchestra presents three symphony seasons a year, and a comprehensive education and community engagement programme. This concert is part of their proactive community outreach initiative, and is an opportunity for the orchestra to thank the people of Durban for their support during the year.

“The holidays are upon us and the time has come to let go of our daily stresses to have a little fun. Bring the kids and the whole family to a free festive concert that will be a highlight of your season!,” says Tembe.

Entry to the Durban City Hall is free and all are welcome.
