In My Story: Shaun Pollock, the South African cricketing legend tells all on M-Net Channel 101 on Tuesday, November 17 at 7.30 pm.
From a family of cricketing royalty to an international record-breaker, Shaun Pollock has always been a poster boy for South African cricket. But for this disciple of the game, the rise to the top was anything but easy.
How did the shy boy from Durban go from back yard bowling to leading South African cricket back from the brink of disaster?
Being born into a family where Shaun’s father, Peter, as well as his uncle, Graeme, were both South African cricketers, meant that Shaun had to work twice as hard in order to be selected for provincial teams and, ultimately, the Proteas, as conspiracy theories about him receiving “special treatment” swirled in the media.
He was thrust into the spotlight as a rookie team captain on the back of one of the world’s biggest sporting match fixing scandals which ended the career of the former Protea captain Hansie Cronje, and led the team through some triumphant, record-breaking matches, as well as some epically disappointing sporting displays, including one particular World Cup cricket match that fans will never forget.
In this episode of My Story, viewers will see how, throughout it all, Shaun remained grounded and modest, as members of his immediate family as well as some other sporting greats tell their versions of his inspirational and humbling journey.
