The film tells the story of a student from 1960s Beijing, who discovers common ground between himself and the animals he lives beside in this period drama from award-winning director, Jean-Jacques Annaud. The film was adapted from the best-selling novel by Jiang Rong, and contains English sub-titles.
Wolf Totem is set in the early years of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, when millions of young Beijing students were sent out into the Chinese hinterlands to teach the “peasants” how to read, write, and increase agricultural production.
It tells the story of an enthusiastic young teacher Chen Zhen, sent by the government in 1967 to the grasslands of inner Mongolia to spread the Joy of Mao.
Eager and outgoing, he becomes a part of the nomadic horsemen – the “brigade,” as his superiors refer to it – and soon becomes, as he says, “truly one of [them]”. Chen Zhen is also fascinated by the interplay between the Mongols’ sheep herding, the wolf pack that preys on the free-range wildlife, and how the locals view this as a holy circle of life.
As Zhen develops an affection for a group of wolves who he comes to see as equals – and attempts to adopt and raise an endangered cub – he has to find his place in a world torn between modern civilization and the rural countrywide he learns to love.
The film also stars Ankhnyam Ragchaa, Basen Zhabu, Shawn Dou and Yin Zhusheng.
The IMAX 3D release of Wolf Totem has been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of an IMAX 3D Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology.
