Steve Hofmeyr will be presenting Toeka 3 to Durban audiences at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway today (September 10), after numerous sell-out shows at the venue.
In 2013 Steve celebrated 25 years of hit music making. Two years later, in-between international touring and book writing, Hofmeyr is back with no less than 17 re-polished gems, each loaded with pure nostalgia, along with two more brand-new originals to complement Toeka’s tried-and-tested, classic staples re-interpreted, formula.
Since 2003’s first collection and 2004’s Toeka 2 CD and DVD release, Steve painstakingly worked through an original list compiled out of requests from fans of songs made famous by others, but which fans begged for his take.
With more than 70 pop played possibilities whittled down to 17 hits and memories first made famous by the likes of Fanie de Jager (Ek Kyk Do Diep In Jou Oe), Cindy Alter (Substitute) and Herbie&Spence (My Enigste Een), this third instalment of classic Afrikaans anchored and English teased hits of yesteryear, is jam-packed with heavyweights and some of the best in the business.
New roads and fresh musical deviations across each and every track compiled, Toeka 3’s choice of tracks each highlights the animated and fun (Hak Hom Blokkies), the controversial (Die Stem) and blissful originality in between.
“The album includes not only my peers, but my contemporaries too,” Steve adds. “Andre Schwartz’s Kom Terug, Danie Botha’s Wie Kan Dit Verstaan, right through to my all-time and career defining favourite Live On from Pierre de Charmoy. It is yet another highlight for me to have trawled and considered just which songs to choose from the wealth of possibility that exists.”
When Steve performs Toeka 3 live, it is with video clip interaction from the original artists where possible, making it a fun and entertaining show that delves into the history of some of his and his audience’s favourite local tracks.
