Durban University of Technology (DUT) presents an original new work, Our Story, a series of original, funky, poignant and funny vignettes, at the Courtyard Theatre in Durban on September 9 and 10 at 7 pm, and at the City Campus in Anton Lembede Street on September 11 and 12 from 12 noon sharp, as part of the DUT Digital Festival.
DUT’s Drama and Production Studies Department’s Nellie Ngcongo has conceptualised, created and directs Our Story, a series of workshopped vignettes which look at issues important to young people in contemporary South Africa: health care, education, unemployment, service delivery and more

Nine students make up the cast who – together with two researchers – have crafted, created and scripted the production under the watchful eye of Ngcongo. The cast auditioned for their roles and is made up of first, second and third years.

The production capitalises on the strengths of the company – be it spoken word, comedy, dance, movement or character acting.
Ngcongo strongly believes in the nurturing of new writing talent and the need for new current material.

“We need our young performers to find new, exciting and relevant voices and for them to look to the contemporary situation for their inspiration,” she says. “We have come through the elation of the new democracy, but the dream has morphed into our difficult contemporary reality. This needs to be expressed creatively.”

The production forms part of the Arts and Design Digital Festival. There will be an exhibition of the creation and rehearsal process in the foyer for audiences to peruse prior to the performance.

Tickets are R40 (R20 concessions). There will be hourly shuttles, on the hour from Ritson Campus to City Campus departing at Ritson Campus car park. For more information contact Lebohang Sibisi at 031 373 2194 or email lebohangs@dut.ac.za
