Following its successful runs at the National Arts Festival,  Grahamstown and at the Wits 969 Festival the critically acclaimed Ovation Award-winning Chapter 2 Section 9 has been described as “brilliant” and a production that “every South African who cares about the freedoms enshrined in Chapter 2, Section 9, should see.” (Mike Loewe, The Critter).

With two more runs scheduled at the Pop Arts Centre in Maboneng, Johannesburg on August 11, 12, 13 and 14, and as part of Vavasati, International Women’s Festival on August 17, 18 and 19 at the Arena, State Theatre in Pretoria, audiences will have the opportunity to catch one of these performances. Award-winning director, Khalo Matabane (State of Violence, Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon and Nelson Mandela: The Myth and Me), has begun shooting his latest feature, 28’s, a gritty exposé of life inside prison.

The film, inspired by Jonny Steinberg’s award-winning non-fiction novel, The Number, its big screen adaptation by Paul Ian Johnson reveals the origins of the fearsome numbers gangs that operate in prisons throughout South Africa. Continue reading

BBC Africa marks the 40th anniversary  of the Soweto Uprising

BBC Africa will bring audiences across the world special programming this week, marking the 40th anniversary of the June 16 Soweto uprisings.

The protests by thousands of students and the police response had a profound impact on the social and political landscape in South Africa.
