Focus on women at FilmClub

LastMistressFANS of arthouse movies rejoice – FilmClub is back at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg, for a new season, starting at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 2.

The Last Mistress, directed Catherine Breillat (France, 2007) kicks off a special focus on women directors. It is a slightly a-typical film from Breillat – a sumptuous period drama which chronicles the intense love affair between a young libertine and an outrageously unconventional, sexually assertive woman some years his senior – the latter played with ferocious sensuality by Asia Argento.

RESIDENTS of Pietermaritzburg are getting the chance to explore the many historic buildings in the city in the new exhibition, Building History: Drawings and prints of historic Pietermaritzburg buildings by Carola Brotherton, which opens in the Schreiner Gallery at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street at 10.30 am for 11 am on Sunday, February 7. Kids of all ages, shapes and sizes, are invited to come to ‘The Hex’ for some jolly surprises; for a merry morning of magic and mirth, with the Teeniest Tiniest Circus on Earth!

The colourful children’s show, The Fantastical Flea Circus, heads for Pietermaritzburg for the first time, for a short season at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Hexagon Theatre in Scottsville from December 8 to 12.   Continue reading

Natalie Rungan in Maritzburg tonight

Durban-born singer and songwriter Natalie Rungan will perform with pianist, Mark Royeppen, and drummer, Bruce Baker, in the historic Government House on Unisa’s Pietermaritzburg Campus in Langalibalele Street on Friday, November 20.

The concert starts at 7 pm and will feature a combination of jazz classics, Natalie’s original compositions and cleverly arranged pop covers to bridge the gap between those who love the classics and those who just want to have fun listening to music on a Friday night.
