Outgoing National Arts Festival artistic director, Ismail Mahomed.
ARTISTIC excellence was celebrated at the National Arts Festival on Sunday morning (July 10) when the winners of the 2016 Standard Bank Ovation Awards were revealed at a ceremony which also honoured outgoing National Arts Festival artistic director, Ismail Mahomed.
Commenting on the impact of the awards, Mahomed said: “The Ovation Awards have earned a significant gravitas in the arts sector. They have become a barometer for audiences and visiting arts managements about productions that should not be missed. Artists at the festival have been bold and have used their talents and skills to engage with burning issues in the most creative ways.” Continue reading

This July sees the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) return for its 36th year of cinematic celebration.
From July 16 to 26 there will be more than 200 screenings in nine venues across the city, as well as an extensive workshop and seminar programme in which industry experts from around the world share their knowledge and skills.
The annual and uniquely free celebration of music and culture, Fête de La Musique in Newtown, brings musical diversity and showcases a broad mix of music ranging from pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, traditional and even to brass band music.
The international musical line-up includes the “King of Salegy” from Madagascar, Jaojoby; the French touch of Benjamin Piat (France) and the Reunionese maloya rhythms and sounds of Grèn Sémé (France/Reunion Island).
The local line-up promises to be as diverse and powerful as the international line-up with SA’s favourites established and growing talents: BCUC, The Muffinz, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Coal Train Band, Go Barefoot, Pilani Bubu, Motsatsing and the Rays, The African Ambassadors Brothers, Zetina Mosia, Maria Mombelli and the Belly Buttons, Amandla Freedom Ensemble, and The Meerkat Mob!
