‘The Ugly Duckling’ – a perfect holiday treat for the whole family
THE KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Youth Ballet’s production of The Ugly Duckling will enchant dance and theatre-lovers of all ages, making it an unmissable treat for the school holidays, writes ESTELLE SINKINS.
Running at the Hilton College Theatre from July 14 to 15, the show features 75 dancers of all ages from Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands and four dancers from the Cape Town City Ballet – former Maritzburg dancers, Stephen Underwood and Sascha Nott, Hannah Ward from Durban and Ivan Boonzaier. Cape Town City Ballet presents Noel Coward’s The Vortex
Marc Goldberg’s dance adaptation of Noel Coward’s hugely controversial play, The Vortex, will be presented by Cape Town City Ballet at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town in July. It’s not to be missed!
The ballet explores themes of drug addiction in 1920’s high society, adultery, ageing and dysfunctional family dynamics over the course of a weekend in the country home of David and Florence Lancaster. Continue reading
Competition for top young ballet dancers announced
The 2nd Prague Competition, a contest aimed at top pre-professional South African ballet dancers, has been announced in Cape Town recently. Qualifying dancers will compete for an opportunity to attend the 14th Prague International Ballet Masterclasses in August, 2016. The prize, valued at more than R40,000, includes return airfares to Prague, plus all other expenses paid. Continue reading
The Vortex – a play without words
THE Cape Town City Ballet will be performing Marc Goldberg’s dance adaptation of Noël Coward’s controversial play The Vortex at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre from August 12 to 23. The ballet is choreographed by Goldberg, under the artistic direction of Elizabeth Triegaardt. Continue reading

Master dancer returns for ballets in Grahamstown
SOUTH African-born ballet master, Victor Hughes, jetted into Cape Town this past weekend. He arrived in time to attend final rehearsals for Cape Town City Ballet’s upcoming production at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. They will present two masterpieces by Hamburg Ballet’s legendary choreographer, John Neumeier.
