‘Shall We Dance’: the perfect treat for ballroom and Latin dance fans

AROUND 100 dancers will be strutting their stuff on the Playhouse Opera Theatre stage in Durban for the 25th season of Shall We Dance.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Youth Ballet’s production of The Ugly Duckling will enchant dance and theatre-lovers of all ages, making it an unmissable treat for the school holidays, writes ESTELLE SINKINS.

Running at the Hilton College Theatre from July 14 to 15, the show features 75 dancers of all ages from Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands and four dancers from the Cape Town City Ballet – former Maritzburg dancers, Stephen Underwood and Sascha Nott, Hannah Ward from Durban and Ivan Boonzaier. A new season of seven wonderful ballets from Russia’s Bolshoi Ballet company – one of the world’s great powerhouses of classical ballet – is currently being screened at Ster-Kinekor’s Cinema Nouveau theatres.

The next ballet to be enjoyed on the big screen is one of the classical ballets of all time, Tchaikovsky’s timeless Swan Lake, which releases on Saturday, February 18 for limited shows. Continue reading

The season of ballets from Russia’s Bolshoi Ballet company continues with the screening of The Golden Age, which releases at Cinema Nouveau on Saturday, November 12 for limited screenings.

The other productions in this season include: The Nutcracker (December 17), Swan Lake (February 18, 2017), The Sleeping Beauty (March 10), A Contemporary Evening (April 21) and finally, A Hero of our Time (May 12). Cape Town City Ballet presents Noel Coward’s The Vortex

Marc Goldberg’s dance adaptation of Noel Coward’s hugely controversial play, The Vortex, will be presented by Cape Town City Ballet at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town in July. It’s not to be missed!

The ballet explores themes of drug addiction in 1920’s high society, adultery, ageing and dysfunctional family dynamics over the course of a weekend in the country home of David and Florence Lancaster. Continue reading

Christopher Kindo, South African award-winning dancer and choreographer, and one of the co-founders of the Jazzart Dance Academy in Cape Town, passed away 20 April 2015.

In recognition of his vast contribution to the cultural reservoir of Cape Town’s creative sector the, Applauz Arts Initiative, an NGO and recognised contributor to the cultural activities of the City of Cape Town and South Africa, the Kindo Family and several of Christopher’s friends have come together to celebrate the life of this creative spirit, friend, son, uncle, brother, youth developer, mentor, choreographer and dancer.
