Vuyani’s Lulu flies SA flag high at US dance fest

Vuyani Dance Theatre’s Lulu Mlangeni has jetted off to the United States to take part in a choreographers’ residency at the American Dance Festival.

Regarded as a rapidly rising star in local dance circles, she will be participating in the festival’s international choreographers’ residency programme at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, until July 30. Continue reading

Christopher Kindo, South African award-winning dancer and choreographer, and one of the co-founders of the Jazzart Dance Academy in Cape Town, passed away 20 April 2015.

In recognition of his vast contribution to the cultural reservoir of Cape Town’s creative sector the, Applauz Arts Initiative, an NGO and recognised contributor to the cultural activities of the City of Cape Town and South Africa, the Kindo Family and several of Christopher’s friends have come together to celebrate the life of this creative spirit, friend, son, uncle, brother, youth developer, mentor, choreographer and dancer.

Burn the Floor: not your granny’s ballroom!

Don’t miss seeing Burn the Floor.

BEFORE there was Dirty Dancing…  before there was Saturday Night Fever… before ballroom dancing became cool with reality TV, there was the real deal – the dancers tearing up the dance floor, in an “international style” competition since 1920.

International style competitions involve five Latin American dances and five classic ballroom dances. From this competition came a theatre production so fabulous, so hot that it’s called Burn the Floor.

Only the fanciest foot moves and tidiest twirls make it on this stage … and they’re coming  the iZulu Theatre at the Sibaya Casino in Durban from June 8 to 19. Continue reading

Detours Festival 2016 celebrates its 5th birthday

AS the Detours Festival celebrates its fifth birthday, the organisers are taking a moment to reflect on the last four years, the founding ethos of the festival and its growth as an experimental fringe platform.

The festival is produced by Wits Theatre for Wits School of Art, Division of Theatre and Performance. It will be held in the Wits Downstairs Theatre at 6 pm on May 26, 27 and 28 and 3 pm on May 29.
