It’s 90s mania at the Barnyard

barnyard 90's Mania 2

The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Umhlanga will be celebrating the venue’s 100th major production with a trip back to the end of the 20th century, when it stages 90’s Mania from March 8 to April 17.

This show is a double celebration of this milestone and a cool decade filled with a variety of pop, rock, alternative, old school and a collection of one-hit wonders!

Featuring an eleven-piece cast of singers, dancers and musicians, 90’s Mania is a blast from the past that saw an emergence of new iconic bands such as Nirvana, The Counting Crows, Eagle-Eye Cherry and many more.

We also saw the emergence of a new selection of rock and pop divas such as Alanis Morissette, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Gloria Estefan; and also new male rockers such as Robbie Williams, Lenny Kravitz and Ricky Martin.

The 90’s hip-hop scene achieved popularity with Coolio and Will Smith, whilst the boy and all girl groups emerged with vengeance, with names such as The Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child, Backstreet Boys, Westlife, Boyz II Men and NSYNC who all dominated the pop charts.

The old school rockers also made their mark with groups such as Genesis, Mike and The Mechanics, Roxette, and UB40; whilst South African music took to the world stage with names such as Brenda Fassie, Mandoza and Vicky Sampson’s hit song African Dream, which celebrated the birth of a new South Africa in 1994.

We will remember the 90’s for the birth of the internet; the growing popularity of PCs and cellphones; and the long forgotten pagers and portable CD players; but this iconic decade delivered some remarkable music.

Television shows like Friends and Beverly Hills 90210 had a huge influence on hairstyles and fashion; with the Rachel and pixie haircuts popular among girls, and curtain haircuts (with a middle parting) and spiked hair the trend among the boys.

In this decade of supermodels (think Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss) and the launch of the Wonderbra, the fashion varied from preppy, to sporty, to grunge.

Trends on the fashion scene ranged from plaid shirts, packet jeans and Doc Martens; to crop tops, sweaters tied around your waist, bomber jackets and platform takkies; to baby doll dresses, dress shorts, crushed velvet, plaid mini-skirts and sweater vests.

And let’s not forget the essential 90’s accessories of chokers, mood rings, bandanas, scrunchies and plastic butterfly clips; all finished off with body glitter; burgundy lipstick and a hint of CK1!

90’s Mania delivers an awesome night that will bring back the memories, songs and parties and that saw the close of the millennium. So, don’t miss out on this ultimate 90’s party!

The cast includes: Graeme Wicks, Zak Toerien, Tarquinn Whitebooi, Jae Green and Martine Loxton on vocals; with Nic Rush on guitar and vocals, Calli Thomson on keyboards, Nico Badenhorst on bass guitar, Michael Ramisimong on drums, and Jemma Shankland dancing.
