Maritzburg poet wins prestigious award

KOBUS Moolman admits he still cannot quite believe that his latest poetry anthology, A Book of Rooms (Deep South, 2014), has won the African Poetry Book Fund’s 2015 Glenna Luschei Prize for African Poetry.

The prize was judged by award-winning poet and scholar Gabeba Baderoon and for his efforts Moolman, who teaches creative writing at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, will receive $5,000. Continue reading

Focus on women at FilmClub

LastMistressFANS of arthouse movies rejoice – FilmClub is back at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg, for a new season, starting at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 2.

The Last Mistress, directed Catherine Breillat (France, 2007) kicks off a special focus on women directors. It is a slightly a-typical film from Breillat – a sumptuous period drama which chronicles the intense love affair between a young libertine and an outrageously unconventional, sexually assertive woman some years his senior – the latter played with ferocious sensuality by Asia Argento.

ATTACHMENTS 1-7 is an acclaimed series of duets that explores the coming together of bodies, desires, fantasies and territories, while uncovering the various negotiations in the stages of our relationships.

It features seasoned dancers and theatre professionals, Athena Mazarakis and Craig Morris, and is directed by Gerard Bester.

A must-see for dance fans, Attachments 1-7 is at the Theatre at St Anne’s College in Hilton Avenue, Hilton, at 7.30pm on Thursday, February 4.

“Our first show of the year is a part of our annual Form 4 Dramatic Arts Residency Programme,” said spokeswoman Lynn Chemaly.

Enjoy jazz at Amber Valley

Listen to popular compositions with a jazz feeling, courtesy of John Gay & Friends in the Amber Valley pub area in Howick at 2.30 pm on Sunday, February 7.
