MARITZBURG pianist, Christopher Duigan, plays a selection of music by two of the greatest Romantic poet virtuosos of the piano, Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt, at 7.30 pm on Friday, February 26 at 35 Montgomery Drive, Athlone and at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street on Sunday, February 28 at 11 am.

The programme will also be presented at St Agnes Church in Kloof at 7.30 pm on Thursday, January 25.

The programme will include the popular Ballade No 3, Waltz in A minor, 3 Etudes from Op.10 by Chopin and a selection of music by Liszt including the beguiling Concert-Etudes ‘Un sospiro’ and ‘La Campanella’.

Duigan, regarded as one of South Africa’s leading concert pianists and a Steinway Artist, has performed much of Chopin’s repertoire in numerous concert performances and developed an affinity with the composer’s unique pianistic style.

He was invited to play two programmes of music by Chopin in four performances at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2010 on the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

He was particularly inspired by a recent trip to Warsaw and the Chopin Museum and will discuss some of his experiences and how it has influenced his approach to performing Chopin’s music in this presentation.
