Newtown Junction kicks off the calendar with Jazz on Junction this Sunday, January 31, from 1.30 pm, at the outdoor piazza.
Open to all, this Sunday’s Jazz on Junction features The Amandla Freedom Ensemble with Strings, combining the musical talents of the Amandla Freedom Ensemble and Resonance String Quartet. Curated by Mandla Mlangeni, the collaboration promises creative dialogue and beautiful music.
The Amandla Freedom Ensemble is an urban arts music collective of young musicians performing the compositional anthology of bandleader and trumpeter Mlangeni, Tumi Mogorosi on drums, Ariel Zamonsky on bass and tenor saxophonists Oscar Rachabane and Nhlanhla Mahlangu.
Dedicated to advancing South Africa’s musical legacy, the Ensemble is committed to collaborative partnerships with new and established musicians and composers, while promoting opportunities for everyone to experience live music.
Sunday Jazz on Junction will also see the launch of Mlangeni’s debut album Bhekisizwe.
