Audition to perform at the Playhouse

The Playhouse Company is holding auditions on December 2 and 3 for those who wish to participate in its Test-Driving the Arts programme in 2016.

To take part in the auditions, which will be held at The Playhouse, contact Khulekani Kunene on 031 369 9440 between 9 am and 4.30 pm only, before the cut-off date of Friday, November 27.

The Test Drive programme is designed to showcase arts practitioners in the fields of indigenous and popular cultural entertainment. Performance genres typically featured in the series include Maskandi, Gospel, Kwaito, Afro Reggae, Imfene, Pantsula, Hip Hop, among others.

The Test Drive series provides workers in Durban’s CBD with regular opportunities to enjoy free lunch-time concerts close to their places of work. It also fulfils a valuable role for the performing arts community as it serves as a showcase for artists to be scooped up by talent scouts on the lookout for quality acts.

Tonight’s Music in the Hills session will feature Nicky Grieshaber with backing from Rudi Engelbrecht; Ruby Gill, Ilan Lax, Mali Zulu and Parable Fifteen.

It promises to be a really great evening of rocking rhythms, great socialising and The Knoll’s usual selection of tasty meals.

Music in the Hills (MiTH) takes place at The Knoll Guesthouse and Backpackers, Knoll Drive, Hilton.

Review: Ubuntu – The Opera; Playhouse Opera Theatre, Durban

 AN opera which celebrates the life and achievements of former President, Nelson Mandela, is not a new concept.

I was privileged to see Mandela Trilogy, Cape Town Opera’s musical tribute to Madiba’s extraordinary life when the production toured to the Playhouse a few years ago. And then there was the ill-fated Madiba: The African Opera, which was forced to close after three days at the State Theatre in Pretoria when it ran out of money to pay performers.

Ubuntu – The Opera, featuring a libretto and music composed by Juan Burgers, provides another look at the iconic statesman’s life, but this time also shines a spotlight on his relationship with Winnie Mandela and how their participation in the liberation struggle impacted that relationship.
