
Fred Wesley
The Godfather of Jazz Funk Fred Wesley is performing for one night only in Durban. As part of his world tour Wesley will be jazzing up at the Sipho Gumede Hall at the Bat Centre in the small craft harbour on November 25. Entry is R50.
Wesley will share the stage with the New JB’s (Bruce Cox, Dwayne Dolphin, Peter Madsen, Reginald Ward, Gary Winters and Phillip Whack).
The American trombonist has been entertaining audiences with sounds and beats of the greats such as James Brown right through to R&B crooner Usher.
Born in Columbus, Wesley started his music career as a band member of the legendary James Brown, showcasing his instrumental talents with hits such as I’m black and I’m proud, Hot Pants as well as Mother Popcorn, to name a few.
When he joined the Count Basie orchestra in 1978 he also released his first album titled To Someone.
Over the past 35 years Wesley has worked with Vanessa Williams, Ray Charles, Randy Crawford and De La Soul just to name a few. Much of his work has been sampled throughout the years by various music artists.
Aside from his hectic tour schedule, he also teaches and imparts teaches his knowledge of Jazz to students from various institutions in the United States.
