Wits Choir wowed audiences in Namibia and the Eastern Cape last month. Now it’s Jozi’s turn to hear them at the Wits Choir Gala Concert on October 24.
The Wits Choir Gala Concert is an event that their fans eagerly await every year. It is the culmination of the year’s hard work and a joy to chorister and audience member alike.
They will be performing the repertoire which they are renowned for – music from South Africa and from the continent with favourites such as Ntakana ntyilo-ntyilo, a isiXhosa folksong, Gebed by Afrikaans poet Koos du Plessis and Alleluia by Malawian composer, Fr Emmanuel Mlenga.
Some new songs have been added to the repertoire and they are, amongst others, Dream for Africa by Namibian composer Engelhard #Unaeb, a Swahili song, Je! Wajua, Yesu anipenda and Bright Blue’s Weeping.
A fresh addition to the concert line-up this year will be the appearance of the newly formed Young Wits Choir. This younger sibling of the 54-year-old Wits Choir was established in 2013 and this will be their first appearance at this prestigious concert.
The concert takes place on Saturday, October 24 at 7 pm in the Wits Great Hall, East Campus, University of the Witwatersrand, Yale Road, Braamfontein. Ticket prices: R60 adults, R40 children, pensioners, Wits staff and Wits students. Available on line at http://www.webtickets.co.za Or R65 adults, R45 children, pensioners, Wits staff and Wits students at the door.
