ARTIST, WP van Heerden, is staging his exhibition, Shattered Views, at the Tatham Art Gallery’s Schreiner Gallery in Pietermaritzburg from Sunday, October 18 to Sunday, December 6.
Van Heerden’s work explores the inequalities of the country in which we live, observing small injustices that remain as a legacy of past wrongs. Each naïve narrative painting is a subtle mockery of the status quo that keeps South Africans in a state of separation and mutual suspicion.
Van Heerden is the founder member of EnableArt; an independent upliftment initiative, relying on donations and art sales for survival. The aim of this organisation is to find and nurture local young emerging artists, giving them the space and resources to create and sell their art.
There will be a walkabout of the exhibition on Sunday, October 18 at 11 am and a workshop from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday, October 24. The workshop will be a right-brain exercise.
The group will converse and create an imaginary landscape with their words, individually represented in diluted oil colour. Van Heerden has invited a group of artists to explore different perceptions at the same situation. The public is welcome to observe the process.
Van Heerden will also be at the gallery on Sunday, December 6 from 10 am to 4 pm. He will be painting on site and will be happy to engage with visitors.
