Swedish-born trumpeter, Jonas Brolin, will be performing with the Durban City Orchestra on September 6.
On Sunday, September 6 at St Agnes Church, Kloof, the Durban City Orchestra presents a classical concert of epic proportions.
Well-known for their popular and symphonic rock concerts with prominent South African artists, the Durban City Orchestra returns to its classical roots with class. The concert features two works seldom heard on Durban stages promising a little something for all orchestral music lovers.
KZN Philharmonic co-principal trumpet player, Jonas Brolin, will take centre stage to perform Haydn’s immortal Trumpet Concerto in E-flat. The corner stone of the solo trumpet repertoire, Haydn’s concerto was the first to truly showcase the myriad of colours and tones that the new chromatic trumpet could achieve, in a masterpiece that allows the solo trumpet to shine through the complimentary orchestral backing.
The Swedish-born trumpeter has garnered accolades both in Europe and the United Kingdom including first prize at the John Packer brass competition, and the Silver medal from the worthshipful company of musicians UK.
As a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician Jonas has appeared throughout Europe, Asia, Russia and United States of America.
The featured work of the concert will be the 9th Symphony by Dmitry Shostakovich. An accessible work, that is both satirical and humorous in its mocking of the Soviet Communist regime.
The symphony is a playful and vivid musical work, with a neoclassical air that has led to comparisons to Haydn’s symphonies as well as Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony. Shostakovich himself considered it “a joyful little piece”.
The concert, conducted by DCO resident conductor Russell Scott, will open with Glinka’s popular Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla.
Bookings can be made through the church at 031 764 2037 or by email at events@stagnes.org.za
