The Parents’ Association of The Wykeham Collegiate in Pietermaritzburg is holding its annual fundraiser at 7 pm on August 28. The event, which takes place in the LHC (Sports Centre) at the school will feature music by the Blarney Brothers.
Part of the evening will also be dedicated to holding an art auction to raise funds to create awareness about the proposed Fuleni open cast coal mine, only 70 meters from the boundary fence of the historic iMfolozi Wilderness area, the first wilderness area in Africa and a sanctuary for threatened rhino.
Art collages have been created by the girls in the senior and junior schools. A Wilderness Trail Experience, generously donated by KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife, will also be up for auction.
To inform and inspire the girls’ art, Sheila Berry and her team from the Global Environmental Trust presented a play at the school about the effects mining would have on the local communities, land and animals in iMfolozi. Apart from inspiring the girls, the play also created an awareness of the importance of preserving our natural heritage.
Tickets for the fundraiser are R200 which includes supper (vegetarian option available) and table wine or grape juice. There is also a cash bar.
