The Market Theatre’s newly renovated and expanded Laager Theatre will be reopened by the sweet sounds of jazz singer Maya Spector.
Maya will perform on July 3 and 4, presenting a tempting mix of jazz standards, up tempo contemporary favourites and some of her own original compositions. She has been delighting audiences in Cape Town for the past several years and now comes to Johannesburg for these two performances only.
Music critic Gwen Ansell said of Maya’s first EP, My Simple Little Song, that “Spector’s voice is pure honey, with the darkness as well as sweetness that implies, and she tells her stories convincingly.”
Maya has plenty of stories to tell. Since being schooled at the University of KwaZulu-Natal as well as Gotenburg University in Sweden, she has lived around the world, from Japan to the United States and South Africa. Her music draws on a wide range of influences and traditions to form a unique texture and sound – but it is one audiences relate to easily when they hear her sing.
Tickets for Sweet Songs of Maya Spector are R120 at Computicket or at the Market Theatre box office. The show begins at 8 pm each night.
