Deep Breath to kick off 2017’s ‘Twosday’ gigs at UKZN’s Centre for Jazz

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Howard College campus in Durban is hosting Deep Breath at its first Twosday gig of the year at 6pm on Tuesday, February 21.

Based in Durban, Deep Breath is made up of Cebo Mthwane on vocals, Joseph Dube on keyboard and Thato Motsepe on drums. Their music comprises of arrangements that are unique. Stylistically, they borrow from jazz, kwaito and dance music.

This trio has been composing and performing together since enrolling to study jazz music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2007 and Creative Arts College in 2015.

“Our intention is to inspire and uplift,” says the band, adding that they have “incorporated an African voice with a grooving and percussive piano.”

The Centre for Jazz & Popular Music (CJPM) is on level 2 of the Shepstone Building. Doors open 5.30 pm. Tickets will be available at the door for R70 (R45 pensioners, R20 students).
